Recruiting in Africa
Lesson 2 of 2 Last reviewed 28 September 2026 8 min

Rules, case themes, and preparation

South Africa's transformation rules, work permits in general terms, typical case themes, and what to prepare.

Firm processes and online tests change from year to year and differ by office. Use this to prepare, and confirm the exact current steps on the firm's own careers page.

Key takeaways

  • South Africa, employment equity: under the amended Employment Equity Act, the Minister sets sector targets, and employers need a compliance certificate to do business with the state.
  • Work permits: foreign nationals need one in each of these countries, and the employer usually applies.
  • Financial inclusion and fintech: mobile money, lending to small businesses, and insurance.
  • Public sector and development: donor-funded work, for example on digital financial services and small farms, and government programs in health, education, and agriculture.

This lesson was checked against the sources listed at the end, official pages first. Firm processes change between offices, roles, and years, so use it as a guide and confirm the details in your invitation and with your recruiter.

Rules that affect candidates

  • South Africa, B-BBEE: the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act aims to increase the economic participation of black South Africans, and companies are measured against the B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice. Consulting firms that serve the state and large companies care about their scores, which shapes hiring and partnerships.
  • South Africa, employment equity: under the amended Employment Equity Act, the Minister sets sector targets, and employers need a compliance certificate to do business with the state. From 1 January 2025, employers with fewer than 50 staff are excluded from the Act's affirmative action duties (Chapter III), including the targets.
  • Work permits: foreign nationals need one in each of these countries, and the employer usually applies. Examples: South Africa's Critical Skills Work Visa needs an occupation on the critical skills list and a job offer; Kenya's Class D permit is for a specific job with a specific employer; Nigeria requires an employer with an approved expatriate quota; Morocco requires Ministry of Labour approval of the work contract (reported, from an IOM guide); Egypt requires a work permit (reported).
  • This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, so check the official immigration page and ask the recruiter early.

Typical case themes

  • Financial inclusion and fintech: mobile money, lending to small businesses, and insurance. BCG's March 2026 report expects African fintech revenue to grow about 13 times, to about 65 billion US dollars by 2030, and notes that much borrowing is still informal.
  • Power and infrastructure: South Africa's utility Eskom reported 300 days in a row without load-shedding in March 2026, after years of power cuts, so cases may ask about both reliability and new supply such as solar.
  • Public sector and development: donor-funded work, for example on digital financial services and small farms, and government programs in health, education, and agriculture.
  • Mining, telecom, consumer goods, and banking, often across several countries at once.

What to prepare

  • Practice cases where the client is a government, a foundation, or a development bank, and agree on the objective and success measures first.
  • Practice market sizing with rough population and income figures for your target country, and state your assumptions clearly.
  • For Morocco and other French-speaking markets, practice cases in French as well as English.
  • If you study abroad, look for each firm's events for its African offices at your school.
  • Read one recent public report on Africa from each firm you target.
