India's campus placement interview day
How placement days, slots and clusters work at Indian business schools, what a consulting interview day looks like, and how to prepare for short, CV-heavy rounds back to back.
Firm processes and online tests change from year to year and differ by office. Use this to prepare, and confirm the exact current steps on the firm's own careers page.
Key takeaways
- Prepare two minutes on every line of your CV: what you did, the number, what you would do differently, and what it shows about you.
- Carrying one bad round into the next: With rounds back to back, a weak first round often damages the second because the candidate is still replaying it.
- Four weeks out: one guesstimate a day in the sizing gym, with lakh and crore conversions until they are automatic.
- Three weeks out: two live cases a day at most, and short fit answers for "tell me about yourself", "why consulting" and "why this firm".
- Two weeks out: CV grilling with a friend who asks "why", "how much" and "what went wrong" on every line.
This lesson was checked against the sources listed at the end, official pages first. Firm processes change between offices, roles, and years, so use it as a guide and confirm the details in your invitation and with your recruiter.
At Indian business schools most consulting offers are made on campus, in a few intense days. The format is different from an office interview abroad: many firms, fixed slots, several rounds in one day, and a CV that interviewers read line by line. The details differ by school and change from year to year, so your placement committee's rules are the ones that count.
Days, slots and clusters
- Some schools run a day or slot system, where groups of firms interview on each day. "Day 0" or "Slot 0" is the name used in coverage of several schools for the first slot, which has included consulting firms (reported, older coverage).
- Other schools group firms by the roles they offer. IIM Ahmedabad says it moved away from a day-based system to a cohort-based one, for a better fit between students and recruiters and so recruiters can assess students over a longer period.
- IIM Calcutta's final placements page describes a cluster format in which firms come to campus by cohort, in March, while another of its pages describes a day format. When a school's own pages differ, ask the placement committee.
- Rules on holding and accepting offers differ by school. IIM Ahmedabad's 2025 placement release says students had full flexibility to reject or hold offers and to keep sitting for other companies. Other schools use policies such as "dream" applications; read your own school's policy before the day.
- Placement reports at several schools follow the Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS) and are audited by a third party. IIM Ahmedabad says it has published audited reports since 2011. Use these reports, not rumours, to see which firms hire.
What a consulting interview day looks like
- Before the day: firms shortlist on CVs, sometimes after a pre-placement talk. An older IIM Udaipur brochure describes shortlisting on CVs, then group processes such as group discussions, case studies or written tests depending on the company, then one or more rounds of personal interviews (read from a snippet).
- On the day: several rounds, one after another, often mixing case, guesstimate and CV questions. One candidate's 2019 account of a BCG summer internship process describes a CV shortlist, a telephone case interview of about 30 minutes, and then three case interviews back to back in one day (reported, a single account).
- Interviewers read your CV closely. Every line, number and claim can become a question, including the ones from years ago.
- Firms may interview several candidates in parallel and decide between rounds, so you may hear within hours whether you continue.
Prepare two minutes on every line of your CV: what you did, the number, what you would do differently, and what it shows about you. Candidates who can defend each line calmly save their energy for the case.
Preparing for the day
- 1Four weeks out: one guesstimate a day in the sizing gym, with lakh and crore conversions until they are automatic.
- 2Three weeks out: two live cases a day at most, and short fit answers for "tell me about yourself", "why consulting" and "why this firm".
- 3Two weeks out: CV grilling with a friend who asks "why", "how much" and "what went wrong" on every line.
- 4The week before: fewer new cases, more timed short cases, and a written plan for the day (slots, travel, food, water, a spare copy of the CV).
- 5On the day: reset between rounds with one minute of notes on what went well and one thing to change, then let the last round go.
With rounds back to back, a weak first round often damages the second because the candidate is still replaying it. Each interviewer usually sees only their own round. Write down one lesson, then start the next round fresh.
Your school's pages describe both a day system and a cluster system for final placements. What should you rely on?
