Find the firms and learn the local process
Office pages, job searches, country career pages, office preferences, and people who have done it.
Firm processes and online tests change from year to year and differ by office. Use this to prepare, and confirm the exact current steps on the firm's own careers page.
Key takeaways
- The Big Four firms (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC) work through separate member firms in each country.
- Write a short list: which firms have an office in your city, which have one elsewhere in your country, and which cover your country from an office in a nearby country.
- Use each firm's job search and filter by your country or city. McKinsey's and Bain's job searches show which offices each role is open in.
- Look for entry-level titles, such as Business Analyst (McKinsey), Associate (BCG), or Associate Consultant (Bain), and for internships.
- Check whether the role is with the strategy team or with a wider consulting or technology team.
This lesson was checked against the sources listed at the end, official pages first. Firm processes change between offices, roles, and years, so use it as a guide and confirm the details in your invitation and with your recruiter.
So What Club is independent. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any firm named in this library. Firm names are trademarks of their owners and are used only to describe publicly available information about how these firms hire. We never reproduce any firm's test or share confidential interview material.
This library has detailed guides for several regions. If your country is not covered, you can still find out almost everything you need in a few hours, using the firms' own pages first and people second. This lesson shows you how.
Step 1: find which firms have an office in your country
- Open each firm's official office or locations page (links at the end of this lesson). For example, McKinsey's locations page lists offices by region, and BCG's offices page lists them by region and country.
- The Big Four firms (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC) work through separate member firms in each country. Deloitte's and KPMG's global careers pages ask you to choose your country and send you to that member firm's site; EY and PwC also organize careers by country.
- Write a short list: which firms have an office in your city, which have one elsewhere in your country, and which cover your country from an office in a nearby country.
- If no firm has an office in your country, look at the nearest regional hub. Many firms staff projects in several countries from one office.
Step 2: check which roles each office hires for
- Use each firm's job search and filter by your country or city. McKinsey's and Bain's job searches show which offices each role is open in.
- Look for entry-level titles, such as Business Analyst (McKinsey), Associate (BCG), or Associate Consultant (Bain), and for internships. If an office lists only experienced roles, it may not run graduate recruiting. This is our suggestion for reading the job lists, not a statement by any firm.
- Check whether the role is with the strategy team or with a wider consulting or technology team. Titles and work differ a lot at the large multi-service firms.
Step 3: learn how and when the office hires
- Read the firm's country careers page if there is one. McKinsey's students pages point to country career pages and list application deadlines (check both directly).
- Read the events pages. McKinsey's and BCG's events pages can be filtered by location, and BCG lists office-specific events such as case interview workshops.
- Learn how office choice works. McKinsey's application asks you to choose the locations or practices you apply to; read its careers FAQ for how preferences are used. BCG asks for office preferences when you create your profile and advises focusing on at most two. Bain's ADvantage program asks applicants to split 100 percentage points across the offices they choose.
- Check whether hiring runs in a fixed season or on a rolling basis. In some regions it is a campus season with deadlines, in others you can apply for a start date through the year. The regional guides in this library show both patterns.
Step 4: talk to people who have done it
- Find alumni of your university who work at the firms in your country, for example through your university's alumni network or LinkedIn. University career centers, such as Yale's, suggest starting with a few alumni in careers that interest you.
- Ask for a short informational conversation, not a job. Keep your first message short, as Stanford's alumni association advises.
- Ask three questions: how does hiring work in this office, which language are interviews in, and what do you wish you had known before applying?
- Join or contact your university's consulting club. Clubs often know the local calendar and run practice cases.
