Performing well to a camera with no one there
The specific skills of a recorded, one-way interview.
Firm processes and online tests change from year to year and differ by office. Use this to prepare, and confirm the exact current steps on the firm's own careers page.
Key takeaways
- Record yourself on your phone answering two or three of your stories, then watch it back once for pace, eye contact and filler words.
- As a stand-alone screen on platforms such as HireVue. Accenture in the UK and US and several Big Four firms are reported to use recorded video interviews.
- As the last step of another screen. BCG's online case is reported to end with a recorded video recommendation of about 60 seconds.
- Depending on the firm, recordings may be reviewed by people, by automated tools, or both, and many firms do not say which.
Official facts come from the firms' own pages. Reported facts come from candidate accounts, university career centres and prep sites, and they vary by office and recruiting cycle. Your invitation always wins: follow what it says. We re-check this page at least every 90 days.
In a one-way video interview, you record answers to questions shown on screen, with no interviewer on the other end. You usually get a question, a little time to think, and then a fixed window to record. Questions are often about motivation and past experience, and some are short business questions. It feels strange because there is no human to react to, which is the skill being tested: can you come across well without a conversation to carry you.
Where you will meet it (reported; varies by firm and office)
- As a stand-alone screen on platforms such as HireVue. Accenture in the UK and US and several Big Four firms are reported to use recorded video interviews.
- As the last step of another screen. BCG's online case is reported to end with a recorded video recommendation of about 60 seconds.
- Depending on the firm, recordings may be reviewed by people, by automated tools, or both, and many firms do not say which. Some do: KPMG UK says its video questions are asked by an AI avatar but a member of its recruitment team reviews and scores your recorded answers.
How to perform
- Structure each answer with the STAR shape so it stays clear without a listener guiding you.
- Look at the camera, not at your own image, so you appear to make eye contact.
- Keep answers tight and finish inside the window; practice the timing.
- Speak warmly and at a steady pace, as if to a real person.
- Check the rules first: some platforms offer a practice question or a retake, many do not.
Common mistakes
- Rambling because there is no one to signal you to stop.
- Reading from notes off-screen, which is obvious and reads as inauthentic.
- Letting low energy creep in because the room is empty.
Record yourself on your phone answering two or three of your stories, then watch it back once for pace, eye contact and filler words. Doing this a few times makes a real one-way video interview feel familiar.
