Impact bullets, one page, and regional formats
The bullet formula, five before-and-after rewrites, the one-page rules, and how formats differ by region.
Key takeaways
- Every CV line should show what you did and what changed because of it: strong action verb, the task, and a result with a number.
- Common mistakes: Listing duties instead of results.
- One page. Recruiters read many CVs quickly.
- Order: education, work experience, leadership and activities, then skills and interests.
- Two to four bullets per role, each starting with an action verb (led, built, analyzed, launched, negotiated).
Key idea
Every CV line should show what you did and what changed because of it: strong action verb, the task, and a result with a number.
| Before (a duty) | After (an impact) |
|---|---|
| Responsible for social media of the student club | Grew the club's Instagram following from 800 to 3,200 in one term by planning a weekly content calendar |
| Worked on a pricing project during my internship | Built a pricing model for 40 products that the sales team used to raise average margin by 2 percentage points |
| Member of the college fest organizing team | Led a team of 12 volunteers to run a 3-day fest for 5,000 visitors, raising INR 6 lakh in sponsorship |
| Did data analysis for the operations team | Analyzed 18 months of delivery data and found a routing change that cut average delivery time by 15 percent |
| Helped with customer service | Handled about 40 customer requests a day and wrote a guide that cut repeat questions by a quarter |
So-what
Each "after" line answers two questions a recruiter has: what did you do yourself, and what difference did it make?
Worked case
Rewriting one bullet, step by step
The prompt
Starting line: "Part of a team that worked on reducing costs at a manufacturing plant."
The structure
- Action verb + what you did + result with a number
- Find your own role
- Name the method
- Measure the result
Working it through
1. Find your own role
Ask: what did I do myself? Answer: I studied where energy was wasted on two production lines.
2. Name the method
How? I measured machine idle time for four weeks and proposed a new shift schedule.
3. Measure the result
What changed? Energy cost on the two lines fell by about 8 percent, roughly EUR 60,000 a year.
4. Write the bullet
"Measured machine idle time on two production lines and proposed a new shift schedule, cutting energy cost by about 8 percent (EUR 60,000 a year)."
The recommendation
The new line starts with a strong verb, shows your own work, and ends with a number. Every bullet on your CV can follow this pattern.
One-page rules for students and early-career candidates
- One page. Recruiters read many CVs quickly.
- Order: education, work experience, leadership and activities, then skills and interests.
- Two to four bullets per role, each starting with an action verb (led, built, analyzed, launched, negotiated).
- A number in most bullets: money, percent, people, time.
- Consistent dates, fonts, and spacing. No spelling mistakes: ask two people to check.
- Include grades or test scores where your region and the firm expect them.
- Interests that are real and specific ("marathon runner, 4 races") start good conversations.
| Region | Usual format | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| United States and Canada | One page, no photo, no date of birth | Grades (GPA) and test scores are often included for students |
| United Kingdom and Europe | Usually one page for students, sometimes two for experienced hires | Photos are no longer expected in most countries; some German-speaking employers still see them. Many firms ask for no photo. |
| India (campus) | The institute's own one-page template, dense with points | School and university scores, ranks, positions of responsibility, and awards are expected. Follow the template exactly. |
| Gulf (GCC) | One to two pages | Nationality and visa status are often included, as they can affect hiring rules. A photo and date of birth are also common on local CVs. International firms usually follow their global format. |
So-what
Norms differ, and firms sometimes give their own instructions. When they do, follow the firm, not the general norm.
Rewrite this line as an impact bullet: "Helped organize a charity run at my university." Invent realistic details if you need to. Then reveal a model answer.
Listing duties instead of results. Two pages for a student. Long paragraphs instead of bullets. Using "we" so the recruiter cannot see your role. Claiming numbers you cannot explain in an interview: every number will be asked about.
Which bullet is strongest?
You are applying from an IIM campus. Which CV format should you use?
Why should most bullets contain a number?
