Bain & Company: the process and its assessments
The stages, the digital screens, and what varies by office, with dated sources.
Firm processes and online tests change from year to year and differ by office. Use this to prepare, and confirm the exact current steps on the firm's own careers page.
Key takeaways
- Application: Apply to a specific office and role.
- Digital assessment: Typically part of the consulting process.
- Interviews: Case interviews and experience interviews, usually over two rounds.
This lesson was checked against the sources listed at the end, official pages first. Firm processes change between offices, roles, and years, so use it as a guide and confirm the details in your invitation and with your recruiter.
The interview process, stage by stage
- 1Application: Apply to a specific office and role. Bain says each role has its own process. What it tests: Academic record, experience, and fit with the role.
- 2Digital assessment: Typically part of the consulting process. Bain emails you after you apply to say whether you will take Sova or TestGorilla; either takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Bain London describes its Sova assessment as covering numerical aptitude, logical reasoning, and behavioral preferences, and Bain says Sova need not be done in one sitting as long as all sections are finished by the deadline. Prep sites report Sova is used mainly in European and Middle Eastern offices. AI tools are strictly prohibited. What it tests: Numerical and logical reasoning, and work preferences.
- 3Interviews: Case interviews and experience interviews, usually over two rounds. For example, Bain London holds first rounds in mid-November and final rounds from late November to early December, with case interviews in both. What it tests: Structured problem solving, a clear commercial answer, and fit.
- 4Written take-home assignment in some roles: Bain lists a written assignment among the interview types it uses across all roles: a take-home challenge related to the role, usually with about three days to complete it, sometimes followed by a presentation. It is a Bain-wide format, not a consulting case, so ask whether your role uses it. What it tests: Working through a task on your own and presenting a clear answer.
The assessments it uses and where they sit
- Digital assessment: Sova or TestGorilla, about 30 to 40 minutes. Bain London's Sova version has numerical, logical, and behavioral sections.
- A written take-home assignment in some roles (a Bain-wide interview type).
- A coding challenge instead of a case for some technical roles (Bain's wording: a case interview or coding challenge).
What varies by office, region, and role
- Which digital assessment you take (Sova or TestGorilla), and when, depends on office. Bain says requirements vary by role and office, and it tells you which one by email after you apply.
- Whether a written, take-home assignment is part of the process. Bain lists it as an interview type across all its roles, not only consulting.
- Application windows and start dates. For example, Bain London lists Associate Consultant start dates several times a year, typically January, March, May, September, and October, and says applications for its 2027 Associate Consultant Intern programme are expected to open in November 2026.
- Timing of the digital assessment: Bain says the link arrives within about one week of applying in some markets, the deadline is in the email, and you can expect to hear within 60 days of completing it. A pen, paper, and calculator are allowed in the assessment, but calculators are not allowed in later interviews.
- AI-enabled interviews: prep sites report that Bain planned an AI-enabled interview component from summer 2026. Bain's global head of talent acquisition has said candidates should expect to use AI in the interview process (as reported by CaseCoach, September 2026). Bain had not published the format on its careers pages when we checked. Its London page says that for the online assessment or virtual interviews, use of AI is not permitted.
Points from public candidate accounts and prep sources
- Reported: interviewers often ask for your answer first at the end of a case, so practice a short, clear recommendation.
This platform builds the underlying skills these screens test and gives realistic practice in similar formats. It never provides or reproduces a firm's actual test, and firms do not allow AI tools, notes, or outside help during their assessments unless they say otherwise in writing.
